EXCITING NEW ADDITION TO
NSU PRIMA SCOOTER LINE
Scooter riders have taken to the NSU
Prima V like the proverbial “ducks to wa-
ter,” according to Mr. W. M. Buchwald,
President of NSU Cycle Products of USz\,
Inc., in West New York, N.J., the new fac-
tory-branch of NSU Werke A.G., Neckar-
sulm, West Germany, that imports and dis-
tributes the NSU Prirpa Scooters, NSU mo-
torcycles and NSU motorbikes.
“After all,” the factory people said, “we
started from the ground up when we de-
signed the Prima. True, we had a good
chance to learn the elements of scooter en-
gineering, but with the Prima we decided to
do something new. We went out and talked
to scooter riders and found out what they
would go for in a new scooter. Then we
talked with our engineers and designers and
tried to translate their vision to the drawing
board.
“They came as close to that ideal as is
possible. Take the engine for instance. Many
riders complained about chain drives. More
often than not, chain drives meant trouble.
This meant dismantling the engine cover,
dirty hands, and all the rest. So we decided
to eliminate every single chain. NSU-Prima
scooters have a four-speed gearbox with di-
rect gear drive and a drive shaft to the rear
wheel. The result: smooth power transfer
without breakdowns.”
“Next peeve of scooter owners was the
springing. Here we had vast experience
from our work on motorcycles. The NSU
type of hydraulic springing has been well-
known since the NSU Fox, so we decided on
hydraulic shock absorbers for both the front
and rear wheel. The rear drive also gets the
benefit of the elasticity of the telescopic
springing. This means no jolts to the trans-
mission—and, conversely, longer engine life.
It takes no effort to get NSU-Prima Scoot-
ers started; they have a foolproof electrical
system and electric starter. The NSU-Prima
starts as simply as a car with the insertion
of an ignition key. But besides this NSU
also has a scooter equipped with a kickstart-
er, the economically-priced Prima III K
model.
“The balance of the Prima is assured in
two ways. First by having the engine in the
exact scooter center, and secondly by having
large wheels. This means the driver does not
have to compensate by shifting his weight
when making turns or using the strong
brakes on wet roads, a common practice
when handling off-center engines. Lastly,, the
color. We bake our color into the scooter.
This means no fading, no blistering, imper-
viousness to water.”
The factory-branch also announced the im-
portation of the new NSU Prima III Scoter.
The difference between the Prime V and the
III models is in engine displacement. The
III models have 150 cc with 7.4 H.P. against
175 cc in the Prime V with 9.5 H.P. And,
conversely, gas economy has been increased.
While the Prima V gets a high 86 mpg, the
Prima Ill’s get the unbelievable economy of
110 mpg, according to the importers.
All are equipped with chrome trimming,
rear seat, luggage carrier and spare wheel.
A strong, technically well-trained dealers’ or-
ganization handles the NSU two-wheeler line
from coast-to-coast but a number of fran-
chises are still open for the fine NSU line of
motor scooters, motorcycles and motorbikes.
