Description
You are looking at a AG6IF Talented Balun. It is a homebrew skyloop HF ham radio 2.5 to 1 antenna Balun for Loop antennas.Add you loop wire of choice and your coax cable for rig connection, and enjoy DX
It consists of:
Custom designed Air core transformer using 14g stranded wire.
Heavy duty ring terminals, all connections soldered.
Enclosure is a rugged electrical junction box.
All pass-thru connections are press fit, and hot glued to keep out rain and weather.
A gasket seals the lid, and held on with 4 corner screws.
The coax connector is a SO239 for your PL259 50 ohm coax.
Tested to 100 Watts, however, designed with heavy duty everything to handle full legal limit..but again, not tested above 100w yet.
Many customers report excellent results up to 700 watts.
Select a loop wire length from the list below from your supply, as large as will fit in your space. Hang it from 3 or 4 points at least 6 feet high and enjoy DX
I have included a picture showing the SWR and Theta sweep for a 40m wire using this balun from 6mhz to 30mhz, which was made with an AIM4170C analyzer.
Select your wire length, and use this balun, it is ready for you to suspend from 3 trees, or 3 PVC pipes even, and remember to add your own coax.
If you are looking at this, you are probably a ham, therefore, check my QRZ page for some diagrams and other info.
there is also a review on Eham discussing the performance of this AG6IF Talented Balun.
I have worked most of the world on this little setup, with the longest being Kenya at about 9,700 miles, using 40 watts.
I am running a triangle horizontal delta loop configuration but you can hang a square if you like, or any other convenient shape.
My antenna height is only 6 feet at the corners and 14 feet at the Balun due to antenna restricted neighborhood.
I have been asked 'why dont I sell these?' So, here it is.
Here is an email from a customer, who has purchased 2 of these, one for his cottage and one for his QTH.
hello Jim:
Been a while since i reported in.
i put up a loop at my home qth using one of your Talented Baluns
like the one i put up at my cottage.
i have had it up here at home now two months.
i have now worked 67 countries !
the loop is cut for 80 meters, it is up 25 feet.
sure works great on 60 meters also.

And another:
Jim,
Well - to say that I am absolutely blown away with this antenna would probably be an understatement. But I can't think of any other suitable accolades. All of the local (Great Lakes Area) HF Nets are being heard like never before and the other Net members have been asking me if I moved to a new QTH. The neighborhood where my remote is has some very noisy electric transformers - but I have been able to deal with it since it is mostly on 75 meters - 40 on down are very enjoyable. In fact - I was even more amazed when I put my call out to the Route 66 special event station in Albuquerque, NM and the guy came back on the first try - and that was on 17 meters. A few days later on 20 meters - I worked a guy in Mississippi who had just received his General ticket and was using the /AG identifier. I was his first HF contact and both of us were excited. This loop - even at only 22' AGL - is definitely not a "cloud warmer" - in fact - about an hour ago, I worked EA8YB in the Canary Islands on 17 meters with a 59+ signal. Wow - I was beginning to think that living in a mobile home park with no antennas allowed would spell the end of my HF activity. But thanks to a lot of research - and the fantastic product created by Jim AG6IF - I am back on the air!!! This is one antenna product that actually delivers and I will definitely be telling everyone I can about how well it works.
And to the frequent question of power handling, the Talented Balun has been customer tested up to ALS600 Amplifier rated at 650 watts.
I now use a new Kenwood Ts 590 with a ameritron Als 600 amplifier.
I very rarely use the amp.don't need it.
90 % of my dx contacts are barefoot with 100 watts and I receive s9
or better. When the signaled are weak I turn on the amp and run 650 watts no problem.
I got a report or 20 db over s9 this morning from Paris France on ten meters with 100 watts !
Got a report earlier this week of 20 over from Saudi Arabia ! again with 100 Watts .
That loop is amazing.

One more:
No question, just a thanks for this amazing loop! This is the 2nd I ve purchased from you, and I can t imagine HF without it anymore.
The quality is the best and I just can t beat the performance with any product, price be damned.
I hang it high in my trees in a 4corner configuration and it performs like a boss.
Thanks again, keep up the great work, and I m about to take a peek at these tube cubes. :)

The balun works excellent with alternate loops wires also.. I have a .030 wire setup made from aluminum TIG/MIG wire which is almost invisible, or the stainless .030 wire, same but stronger.
You can use also 18 or 16 gauge wire if you have some in the shack...it's not picky on diameter..just remember to cut the length as shown below.
2m = 7 feet
10m = 35 feet
17m = 48 feet
20m = 64 feet
40m = 128 feet
80m = 260 feet
160m = 520 feet - 550 feet
This listing includes the Talented Balun only, you must add your loop wire, cut to a length from the list above.
