This is my deluxe model roll up Slim Jim/J-Pole antenna.

This antenna has a SWR of 1.5 or lower across the GMRS band and well beyond.The 6db of gain you get with this antenna over a typical j-pole more than makes up for the 1db loss in the coax.
Here is why,
A Slim Jim antenna is basically similar to a J-pole design, but it exhibits a lower radiation angle in the range of 8-10 degrees on the horizon, compared to 1/2 wave J-pole which exhibits a 20-30 degree angle on the horizon. (ie. more gain)
Some have suggested these Slim Jim work better than a 5/8 wave antenna.

TO USE THE ANTENNA EFFECTIVELY
Straighten the antenna hanging it vertically from the loop at the top. The antenna needs to be hung in an open area with at least 3 feet away from any objects all around the sides of the antenna. In other words, you want the antenna hanging in free space!
