    Description

A 1909 Gorham Company Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition Medal (Likely High Relief). This Medal is composed of Bronze, it is approximately 3 in. (75 mm) diameter and weighs approximately 174 grams. Inscribed GOLD MEDAL. This is a gorgeous medal with a seated allegorical female figure with an olive branch in one hand and a plaque of Washington in the other. She is flanked by two men that appear to be miners or prospectors or pioneers as well as a Native American in a canoe. In the background is a steam ship and a rising sun. Near the edge is the text: Alaskan Yukon Pacific Exposition 1909 Seattle 1909. Just below and to the left of one of the miner's feet is F. Ziegler, which we believe to be the designer of this piece. The other side has an ornate floral wreath with an inscription plaque and GOLD MEDAL above. At the 6:00 position is: The Gorham Co. This medallion is in good condition although it does have some show signs of wear near the GOLD MEDAL inscription. We encourage you to review the photos to evaluate the condition. It has a lovely rich patina. Medals of this event were inscribed GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE, the term is specifying the level of recognition, not the composition. Reportedly, the medals could have been struck in actual Gold but only at the winner's expense. This is a beautiful Bronze medal and a great piece of History.  Shipped with USPS First Class
