Description
This is a COMPLETE SET OF TWELVE original first day covers, each featuring original cachet artwork and a "Project Mercury" 4-cent stamp (Scott 1193), cancelled at Cape Canaveral on the stamp's issue date of February 20th, 1962, the day of John Glenn's historic "Friendship 7" orbital flight. These covers celebrate seven men, selected in 1959 from a pool of the finest test pilots of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, who went on the become NASA's original Mercury 7 astronauts. These were the brave explorers who took the first tentative steps that would lead, less than ten years later, to America's success in achieving John Kennedy's goal of putting a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.
Complete descriptions of each of the covers can be found in my other auctions. Each of them is available separately beginning at plus shipping, but in this listing you can get All TWELVE, the complete set, for only , postage included! They'll make a handsome addition to your NASA or philatelic collection.
(Please note:
for public display here on Ebay,
the covers have intentionally been photographed at a relatively low resolution. The art and colors on yours will be crisp, clear, and vibrant, although since these are nearly 60 years old, minor toning of the paper or telegraphing of the adhesive may be evident in some of the covers.)
