    Description

    An unusual colander with smooth dark brown Bakelite handles, by Dutch manufacturer Berk Kampen in the 1930s. Aluminum, called Berkelite by the company, a line started in 1930. Mid-century modern flair. Espresso dark brown handles—I thought they were wood until I found the ad for the original 22-piece Berkelite set of which this would have been a part. Maker’s mark “Berk Kampen 26” next to one handle.
    Handles are sturdy and smoothly transition into the metal in a unique way. Colander has an overall patina of wear but the metal is in good shape. Sits sturdily on a countertop. A slight inward dent in the bottom of the bowl makes the top of the colander tilt about 1/4” to one side. This does not affect use.
    Great addition to a Bakelite collection.
